We were planning on spending a few more nights camping at various spots within the Fitzgerald River National Park but decided to head to Esperance as Sharni picked up some relief teaching work there. We are currently staying at Esperance Holiday Park. The caravan park is the closest one to the centre of town and is RIGHT next door to the Esperance Port and train line. Besides the very noisy honking, tooting, choo chooing and truck braking at ALL hours the location is great. Easy walk right into town. We have spent a fair amount of time walking through town, riding our bikes around, driving to different beaches and even went for a bus tour through the port. Esperance is quite bike friendly with bike paths tracking along most of the main roads. We rode to the pub for a steak sandwich and beer and to a few shops around the place. The beaches around Esperance are some of the nicest we’ve ever seen. Purest white fine powdery sand and beautiful sheltered bays. There are some tracks that run through the dunes and down to some of the beaches. We went down one of them, was steep and treaturous, down to the sandy beach for some fishing. We caught one small mullet. March flies were in plauge proportions. We like Esperance. We could imagine ourselves owning a holiday home there. It’s a well kept town and the beaches and coastal scenery are trully world class.
The last time we were in Esperance was the Australia Day long weekend in 2002. So we thought it would be nice to have dinner at the same seafood restaurant we’d eaten at when we were last there. We were a little disappointed that the same dish we shared a decade ago was no longer on the menu but we suppose restaurants change there menus after 10 years ha ha!
The weather for the first three days was perfect but yesterday it started to rain and it hasn’t stopped since. We’ve had that a few times on our trip so far. The weather on the south coast of Western Australia can be unpredictable in summer.
